Where Washington Wine Growers

Sunny Disposition

Prosser, Washington is a bucolic ag town bathed in wine. With 30+ wineries and upwards of 20,000 acres of winegrapes, nearly everyone you meet in Prosser contributes to the Washington wine industry in some way, shape, or form. We shine in wine!

Prosser is a relaxed – and welcoming – wine community. We grow what we eat, here. We grow what we drink, here. And we love to share the fruits of our labor with others. The connection of land to hand to bottle has made Prosser wine country an essential part of the State’s overall wine buzz: fine winemakers from other regions in Washington source premium grapes from growers in the Horse Heaven Hills and the gentle slopes surrounding Prosser. Grapes are planted on original rootstock in the arid landscape in Southeastern Washington State: the amiable breezes give growers a helping hand and the long growing season, coupled with the warming rays of the sun, allows for ample time throughout the year to sip on the premium production from our area.

Prosser is a hive of wine activity with tourism-oriented amenities to accommodate all. Lodging options include upscale, unconventional tiny houses overlooking the Columbia River; romantic winery quarters near the Yakima River; plush, boutique rooms in downtown; familiar hotel brands; and a wine country RV park complete with daily wine tastings from local producers. Taste buds are satiated in Prosser with contemporary fine dining, alehouse options, food cart noshing, and wine country fare at various wineries.

Come for the wine! And soak up the vibrancy in Washington State’s diverse epicenter of agriculture.

Direct From the Source

Southeastern Washington is one of the most fertile and productive regions in the world. 60+ different grape varieties are grown in the area including Washington’s “Big Five” – Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Riesling, and Chardonnay. Growers don’t just experiment with “other” varieties, here – they excel at growing Mouvedré, Malbec, Sangiovese, Tempranillo, Viognier, and Chenin Blanc, to name a few. As a supplier of premium grapes to the rest of the state, many of Washington’s icon brands source grapes from the rolling hills surrounding Prosser.

Washington State’s economy benefits from more than $3,000,000,000 of annual revenue generated by 60+ crops in the area, including the production of premium winegrapes. World-class vinifera research happens on a daily basis at Washington State University’s Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center (IAREC) on the north side of the Yakima River, just minutes from downtown Prosser. Dr. Walter Clore, affectionately dubbed “The Father of Washington Wine”, spent a lifetime of meticulous winegrape research at the IAREC center in Prosser, assuring Washington farmers that they could grow a premium product and produce fine wine.
